Singapore has long been the business centre of South-East Asia. Its unique location, and its strategic influence have caused the interest of both local, and global political and economical powers. Ever since Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles first established the city in the place and with the function it holds today, this city has ever grown in importance. Today, Singapore is a cosmopolitan city, with many ethnicity, and many, many different cultural influences. The Chinese, who are the most numerous ethnic group in town have brought with them their culture, and that has influenced the development of the artistic scene in this great city-state. Other influences were there as well. Particularly strong were the British cultural influences. This is no surprise, considering the timespan during which the British government controlled the city. Today, the modern popular culture, which usually takes its roots from the United States, is also very influential here.

So, Singapore is a city which lives its life influenced by a myriad of cultures. This can also be perceived if one takes a look at various artistic happenings that are taking place in the city. Lately, the interest for fashion is on the rise in Singapore, and more and more young people are opting for some of the various fashion design courses which can be found at various colleges here in Singapore. There is quite a few institutions of the sort that are offering these kind of courses in Singapore, so we will mention just some of them.

Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts

We have already mentioned the influence of the Chinese culture and arts in Singapore. Well, this school, founded way back in 1938, has made an additional impact, that came from Chinese artists, on the art in the city. It’s not easy for budding fashion designers to get a good start from the blocks. With so much talent around you have to run many laps, jump hurdles and take the odd tumble, hitting the finish line. Then you have to start the race all over again, every season. And just as you’ve made a little head way, someone wants to conscript your inspiration.

It’s a bit like kick starting a Triumph Bonneville on a cold morning. Perhaps these old machines were not so functional but certainly poetry in motion, even at a stand still. Inspiration can come from anywhere at any time, be prepared.

All you budding designers get hold of a triumph photograph and pin it on your studio wall. It will be a constant source of inspiration as you delve deeper into its mechanics. This machine encapsulates all the elements of good design, in principle, proportionately perfect, mathematically correct.

Here is an interesting anecdote from that era: 1969 Nutters of Savile Row opens on Valentine’s Day and unleashes the Tommy Nutter/Edward Sexton style on swinging London.
