Fashion Design School Degrees

The world of fashion design encompasses more than design. If you love the world of fashion and want to make your mark on it there are many other ways to do it other than to become the next Vera Wang.

Fashion design schools offer courses in fashion and retail management, fashion merchandising and fashion marketing.

If you can’t design fashion but have an eye for putting the look together and knowing intuitively what the next “hot” look will be, perhaps you’d want to look into a fashion design school with an eye towards becoming a fashion purchasing manager in the retail sector.

Every big department store such as Nieman Marcus and Saks has fashion buyers. Everything that is in a department store that is offered for sale was picked out by a buyer.

These fashion purchasing managers or fashion buyers choose and buy the products that are sold in retail stores. Imagine for a moment attending the latest fashion shows in the US and Europe. Seeing first hand the latest fashion offerings of the big name couture design houses such as Lauren, Dior, Gaultier, or the ready-to-wear collections of Balenciaga and Herrera.

Don’t think for one minute that the life of a fashion buyer or fashion purchasing agent is all glitz and glamour and hobnobbing. A fashion buyer must have a solid education and expertise in sales and store management.

Fashion buyers are usually graduates of a fashion design school and are hand selected by stores such as JC Penny to enter their training programs. They need a bachelor’s degree in marketing and merchandising. Some stores require that a buyer hold an MBA.

There is a hierarchy that is followed in fashion buying. Generally stores will hire new employees as junior buyers to help associate buyers. A fashion buyer usually starts out responsible for one or two different fashion brands. It may take years of experience before associate buyers become senior fashion buyers.

Fashion Buyers must be able to develop strong working relationships with manufacturers reps. They must be able to negotiate prices and be able to communicate with a wide variety of people. Strong work ethic and a positive attitude are also required.

Career in Fashion Designing

Does your creativity work unabated when you look at textiles, fabrics, embroidery? Do you think you could have done it better when you see a dress in a store? Does your adrenalin run high when you see the coverage of fashion weeks on television? If you experience all this, a career in fashion designing is just right for you. A fashion designing job gives you the freedom to explore and utilize your creativity to the fullest and earn name, fame and money purely based on your talent. It is a very exciting career and offers unlimited scope of growth and a window to showcase your ability to the fullest. The fashion industry has seen a surge in the recent years in India. Fashion has moved out from just Bollywood and the affluent Indians to the drawing room of Indian middle class. Thus, the scope has widened a lot.

In India, especially, a fashion designing job holds vast opportunities. There is a huge garment and textile industry in India which gives ample scope to fashion designers to innovate with fabrics, styles, embroidery, motifs and designs. The handwork and dyeing of fabrics of India is world-renowned. Thus, the fashion industry will thrive in India to no limits. It is not just garments that it is limited to although garments form the major chunk of our fashion industry. There are not just garments that one can design but also footwear, bags and other accessories that come under the purview of fashion designing. And there are no fixed patterns or styles that one needs to follow. If you have an eye for detail, a good observation of trends and likings and the penchant to create something new and visualize colors and cuts, you will thrive well in the field of fashion designing.

Those who take up fashion designing jobs get to do what they love and love what they do. It is not a run-of-the-mill kind of a job that you have to stick to from nine in the morning to five in the evening. It is a glamorous and exciting job that also pumps your adrenalin. There is a lot of sweat and hard work that goes behind it all. There are tight deadlines that fashion designers work under if there is a fashion week going on or if there is demand from the customers. Also, a lot of customization of products is required. Fashion designers are expected to come up with original concepts and design in fascinating colors and cuts in limited time. However, the satisfaction that a fashion designer feels when a product of his/her creation comes to life and receives appreciation is unmatched.

Needless to say that to be a good fashion designer, one has to be creative with an artistic bent of mind. This is the basic attribute to have before you think of entering this job. With creativity and innovation, a good visual sense and an excellent aesthetic sense is also required. Then, to thrive, a good market sense and knowledge of the current trends is mandatory. Since a fashion designer has to take charge and supervise from conception to execution of a design, it is required to have that managing ability. Thus, summing it all up, to succeed in fashion designing jobs, one has to be artistic and creative with good sketching and drawing skills, original and innovative with design and ideas, a good aesthetic sense, ability to synchronize well in a team, good management skills and an acute awareness of market trends and events in fashion.

As a fashion designer, at the job, you would be required to design and create stylish outfits and accessories to match. If you are working with a senior designer, which is always advisable in the beginning, you would have to get the designs executed and implemented by other staff. Your seniors would approve the designs that you create and would also suggest modifications. It is always better to work with a senior designer to get a feel of ho things work in the industry. Since the industry completely thrives on human skills, there is a lot of value placed on human assets and talent. If you are good at your work and hard-working, you would surely be noticed. There is no fixed work environment that you can expect at the workplace. Each designer has different work ethics. There are ample job opportunities with professional designers, manufacturing units, export houses, boutiques and fancy stores and in TV and films as costume designers.

Pursuing A Bachelors In Design Degree

Anyone looking to pursue a career in design will almost certainly need to get a bachelor’s degree in design before applying for prospective employment at any given firm. Design bachelors degrees are undergraduate academic degrees generally lasting three or four years and are aimed at giving you the core skills and knowledge that you’ll need to pursue a career in your chosen field. This article will look at the various sub-fields of design in which you can pursue a design bachelor degree.

If you’re looking to pursue a career in design it will usually be because you have a certain amount of visual flair and an interest in combining the aesthetic with the functional. We live in a society that is in a constant state of flux and therefore always subject to new influences. This in turn creates a need for designers to create new designs (regardless of the field) which are reflective of the environment and the times in which we live, whilst at the same time delivering functionality that hopefully makes our lives a little easier.

There are various sub-sets of design in which you can specialize. The field of graphic design is aimed at providing visual impact to corporate communications; web design is about constructing appealing and useful websites; industrial design is concerned with producing new products that have both functional and aesthetic appeal; fashion design is an applied art relating to clothing and accessories; interior design about designing pleasing spaces in which people can live and work; and games design about designing entertaining electronic games for people to play.

All of these fields will have an associated bachelor’s or associate degree attached to them. Bachelors in design degrees are obtained from a college, University or other accredited school program and will take four to five years to complete depending on how fast you wish to graduate and on how many concentrations, majors or minors you wish to attain. A bachelor’s degree will have a direct effect on your earning potential: a 2002 report by the American Council on Education showed that a an average individual with a bachelors degree earned $22,000 per annum more than a high school graduate and $14,000 more than an Associate’s degree recipient.

There are an increasing number of schools that are now offering online design degrees via the Distance Education Network. The curricula on offer via online undergraduate programs are not substantially different than those on offer to those whom are required to physically attend a campus. An online degree obviously gives you greater flexibility in how they go about pursuing your studies as well as a greater choice of schools.
