To most people, becoming a fashion designer seems like an unrealistic aim. You might see things differently – and you might be right.

We have all heard of students being snapped up by major fashion houses not long after leaving a well-known fashion college. (Stella McCartney was made the chief designer of Parisian fashion house Chloe, after producing only two of her own collections.) But the acclaimed reality TV show ‘Project Runway’ showed that students on fashion courses at small, relatively unknown colleges, can win international competitions. He later worked in fashion in Paris, and finally studied for a Master of Arts in fashion design in London. His entire final year college collection was snapped up by fashion patron Isabella Blow. And he’s now one of the most recognizable names in fashion.

A lot of famous designers came to the profession from different fields: celebrated French fashion designer Christian Lacroix studied history and museum studies, before obtaining a position with Hermès in Paris, and, later still, setting up by himself. And Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto studied law before taking up fashion.

Duration: While GDPD is a 4-year intensive undergraduate programme, PGDPD runs from 2 years to 2 and half years.

National Institute of Fashion Technology

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is one of the premier institutes in India. Established in the year 1986, it was formed under the endorsement and guidance of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Beginning its operations in New Delhi, it has now campuses in cities like Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Mumbai, Patna, Shillong and many more.

Courses: NIFT offers undergraduate, certificate and postgraduate courses.
•    Bachelor of Design (B.Des) in fashion design, leather design, accessory design, textile design, knitwear design and fashion communication.
•    Master of Design (M.Des)
•    Master of Fashion Management (M.F.M)
•    Master of Fashion Technology (M.FTech)

Duration: While B.Des is 4-year program, various certificate courses have duration of 1 year, 6 months, 4 months or 3 months. Master level programs are of 2 years.

Pearl Academy of Fashion

Pearl Academy of Fashion, established in 1994, is the premiere institution for fashion, design and management.
