Choosing a Graduate Art School
You finally graduated with a bachelor’s degree in art, but think you may want to continue your education. Earning a graduate degree in your field can expand your career choices in addition to making you a better artist. If you are considering attending graduate school, you will need to choose the right one.
You will need to put a lot of thought into choosing a graduate school. You should always choose an accredited art school for earning your graduate degree. In addition to choosing an accredited art school, there are many other criteria to consider. Some people consider studying under renowned instructors as the most important criteria when selecting a school. Others prefer an institution because of the curriculum or learning environment. Cost and location are also important. Before you settle on a school, make sure you visit the campus and talk to students to make sure that it is the right fit for you.
You also need to consider what you are going to graduate school for. Degrees are offered in many fields including graphic design, painting or digital arts, fine art, photography, sculpture, web design, fashion design, advertising, animation, game design, industrial design, interior architecture and design, multimedia communications, television and motion pictures (film) and special effects. If you are very passionate about your particular field, check out art schools that are well known for that specific program.
Choose an art school that helps you achieve your full potential and also prepares you to gain employment as an artist. Some art schools are more focused than others on teaching students to market themselves and their art. Take the time to find out what different schools do to help graduates find employment after graduation and check out what art shows they host to showcase students’ work.
Do not get discouraged if you feel you cannot afford earning a graduate degree. You can find scholarships from a number of sources. Art schools offer different scholarships based on financial need, academic performance, your portfolio, and other criteria. Do not forget to check with local artist organizations or other institutions because some of them also offer scholarships. You should also check into loans for graduate school, and you may even get your current employer to help with the cost of tuition.
Preparation will make getting into the art school of your choice easier. Make sure that you know when you need to submit your application, transcripts, and other materials. Generally, all art schools also require you to provide a portfolio of your work. The school may also require an in-person interview. The more work you put into presenting yourself and your art, the higher your chances of getting into your dream art school.
