Reconstructing global design sensibilities into understated contemporary elegance the brainchild of Ankur and Priyanka Modi has gone into a new fashion idiom creating a niche appeal through its luxury pret. Recalling their early days Priyanka said, “Graduating in Fashion Design and Technology from London School of Fashion, U.K; I started working for ‘NITYA’a fashion label which has a presence all around the world but is very strong in France and UK so I opted for them as my design sensibility and also because that is one of the few brands I love wearing myself.” On the other hand Ankur, son of designer Anju Modi has done engineering from the University of Melbourne, Australia. Soon after he started working with his mom, looking after her production, finance and retail, he garnered great insight into the workings and building of a Brand.  

As far as choosing designing as a career is concerned both have a different story to tell. For Ankur, it was a legacy which he got from the very talented Anju “I grew up with a lot of fashion around me. My mother being one of the first designers of the country, I had lived in this environment from my childhood. Like in every business, my mother also needed family hands to help grow her business. I was very hesitant in the beginning having done Engineering, but when I fell in love with a designer herself (wife Priyanka), there was too much seduction to refuse” For Priyanka, this was her most natural choice “In the years that I was growing up, I was constantly looking for outlets for my creative energy, and I think even then there was always a slight bent towards designing clothes than anything else. I believe in destiny and the fact that the world conspires to help you achieve it. I think in my case things just fell into place”.

Comfort takes the centre stage in their design philosophy Fabrics are elegantly tailored using pure and woven materials. “We do knits, handicraft (old methods of printing and embroidery stitches), and everything in between, making our garments extremely contemporary and understated”, said the designer couple. The designer duo took no time in defending the fact that fashion trend is getting repetitive “Fashion does, like history, repeat itself. The repetition can be re-named or re-framed but essentially it’s still a repetition.” And what’s their take on Indian fashion industry going global? “We have caught global attention. Our presence at Fashion Weeks abroad is a positive indicator.

The only thing lacking is a truly global fashion brand in terms of scale and scope and would definitely end eavour to fill that slot.” Both shared. Speaking about the latest news of fashion hub they said “The Fashion Hub is a very necessary and ambitious project. It has been sadly a long time coming….but the recent developments of land allocation and government involvement do seem positive.” “Personally I am extremely fond of Bottega Veneta and Armani”, says Priyanka. Ankur goes with the forever classical ‘Chanel’ when we asked about their favourite designers. For Ankur, their label and its sensibilities have been largely accepted by the domestic market and this has greatly encouraged them to aim higher and foray into the international realm of fashion space.

To most people, becoming a fashion designer seems like an unrealistic aim. You might see things differently – and you might be right.

We have all heard of students being snapped up by major fashion houses not long after leaving a well-known fashion college. (Stella McCartney was made the chief designer of Parisian fashion house Chloe, after producing only two of her own collections.) But the acclaimed reality TV show ‘Project Runway’ showed that students on fashion courses at small, relatively unknown colleges, can win international competitions. (Graduate of American Intercontinental University’s London campus Christian Siriano was the recent winning designer of season 4 finale.)

But, even if you don’t get name recognition right off, plenty of other designers start with very small budgets, and very small clothing collections. British fashion company Red-or-Dead began by selling vintage clothes on a local market stall, and then added their own clothing to it. They now have their own lines of shoes, bags, sunglasses, and watches, along with a world wide following. Alexander McQueen served an apprenticeship as a tailor after leaving school. He later worked in fashion in Paris, and finally studied for a Master of Arts in fashion design in London. His entire final year college collection was snapped up by fashion patron Isabella Blow. And he’s now one of the most recognizable names in fashion.

After three years of hard work, training and the efforts of the faculty members, an annual fashion show organized by the graduating fashion students. The fashion extravaganza was marked by the introduction of a new batch of students to this glamorous industry of fashion. The event which feel the presence of big names of the fashion industry like Sunil Sethi, President of FDCI, designer Rohit Bal, Leena and Ashima, Mr. Deepak Bhandari, director marketing of Modi Revlon and Mr. Anil Manan, vice president and executive creative director of McCann Ericson, at the Grand ballroom of The Grand Hotel in the capital on Saturday evening.  

To add to the glamour quotient to the event, the ramp was ablaze by models viz Alisha Parekh, Anchal Oberoi, Kajal Srivastava, Anousha, Ankita Jain and Ritu Kapoor. By the end of the evening, the show presented a group of designs by 24 students of the school. “Quintessence 2009, exhibits the creativity and professional skills of the graduating batch of the Fashion School.

This is the culmination of years of diligent work and training of our students and the enormous efforts of the faculty,” informed Vinay Pasricha, Chairman, WLCI. The collections were critically reviewed and evaluated by respected names from the fashion world, such as fashion designer Samant Chauhan, Aseem-Head Designer for Tarun Tahiliani, Amarjeet-Head Designer GFO, Pam Mehta-Head Designer Kimaya and fashion consultant Anish Tahim.  

Samant said, “I have been seeing the students and their work from past three years and this year Ihave seen an immense difference in their designs. They have shown a huge improvement. Though there were collections which were good and some which were not so good, but the hard work of the students is noteworthy.” The group of jury members included Deepti Baveja, campus director, national head graphic designing of WLCI; Sangitika Nigam, National Head Media of WLCI, Kajal Gupta, Senior Fashion Faculty of WLCI; and Aditi Jha, Fashion Faculty of WLCI. The gala event came to an end by the awards ceremony.  

The Best Portfolio Award was offered to Utkarsh Gupta for the theme ‘Vrindavana’. Showcasing Organic Tessellations, the award for the Best Technical Excellence was grabbed by Shewta Garg. Working under the theme of the ‘Perfect Women’, Diksha Rampal managed to grab the attention of the jury and achieved the Five Star Kingfisher Designer of the Year Award. A concept driven collection always manages to allure the audience and if the theme is the fashionable word- ‘recession’, then surely it will get noticed and this proved successful for Nidhika Shekhar who held high the Best Concept and Creative Collection trophy. Vanlal bagged the award for the Best Commercially Viable Collection and Best Craft Revival award or the collection based on the theme of East meets West.
